Her cancer is a rare thyroid cancer. Not lymphoma as we suspected. Lymphoma would be a day at the beach compared to the nightmare we're in right now. It is untreatable and stage 4. All they can do is remove as much as they can and she'll take pills for the rest of her life to hopefully hold the rest of the tumors at bay. 26% five-year survival rate. It's in her BONES.
Going to see a specialist in Lexington today.
Going to see a specialist in Lexington today.
intense Says:
omg. I don't know what to say. So stunned. I am going to believe she will beat this hands down.
lunamor Says:
I can't think of anything more devastating. So many tears. I love you.
Simon Says:
I can’t say how sorry I am to hear this. You both obviously have my utter sympathy.
kittenheel Says:
I don't know what to say, Susan. She's always been a rare creature, and I choose to believe she'll prove her uniqueness yet again by laughing at that 26% figure ten years from now. Please remember that 24/7/365, we are there in spirit with you. Every. Step. /homepage
Fritz The Bootlegger Says:
26% isn't 0 and that's not nothing. That kid has a mental and physical toughness that most can't fathom. She will draw on that strength to fight this. She is the A-Train.
We love you and are keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers. /homepage
Evil Fury Says:
My parents are determined for us to go to MD Anderson--a clinic in Houston, I think. We will definitely run it by the specialist today.
Rockboy Says:
yeah it is supposedly the best cancer hospital in the world
/homepage
Fritz The Bootlegger Says:
MD Anderson is the first one that came up when I googled this. MD Anderson is always top 5, they specialize in rare cancers, so while Children's Healthcare in Atlanta might see 1 case of this type, MDA sees 200. /homepage
kittenheel Says:
^ They're right. Leading edge technology and clinical trials. /homepage
snow Says:
I can't think of anything more to say than I've already texted you. All the good thoughts heading your way. And a lot of people beat the odds. Remember that. Love you. /homepage
H3OsMama Says:
My God, Susan. I'm so sorry. I agree, with everyone. She is a tough kid, and will make 26% her bitch. I am with you in prayer and spirit, and anything you need! It sounds like MD Anderson is worth checking out. Love you so much, and I hate that this is happening. /homepage
fakebrunette Says:
I'm sorry this is happening to Autumn, but I know that gorgeous smart intelligent girl will be fighting against this
kittenheel Says:
And seriously: I can work wherever there's WiFi, so if you just need someone to sit by your side during any of this, give me 24-48 hours notice and I'm there. And I'll get a hotel because who the hell wants house guests when you're going through something like this. /homepage
rescuebabe Says:
You all are in my thoughts and prayers daily. I've got all of July off if you want someone to come cook, clean, babysit, or just listen for a couple days. Have camper, will travel ;)
Huge (hugs). /homepage
Nightbreed Says:
I'm so sorry to hear this. My heart is sending thoughts of resilience, strength, hope and healing to Autumn and the whole family.
Don't worry. It's treatable Says:
Sending the best vibes your way. Love you guys lots. Xx.
Evil Fury Says:
Update: Now Even Shittier News! It's inoperable, and they are focusing on palliative care. If we get her to MB Anderson they can tinker around with experimental shit, which is fine with me, but this is not good.
lunamor Says:
I'm hoping that Texas Hospital can help her. I have to hope. Have to. The despair is too much.
I can't say it enough: I love you.
kittenheel Says:
Trying to think if I have any contacts at Anderson. Is there anything we can do in the meantime? Gas cards, restaurant gift cards? Anything that will make life a teeny bit more convenient? Just name it and we're on it. /homepage
Rockboy Says:
yes!^ i only know breast cancer contacts. I wish i knew more.
/homepage
idoru Says:
I'm so sorry! I can't believe how it keeps getting worse everytime you blink either. Hope the experimental stuff works and she does , however it happens, kick its fucking ass.
/homepage
Evil Fury Says:
All of her doctors know people at MDA so we're good. And Bulldog, I am all for experimental treatments. I wasn't dissing them by calling them "shit." Hell, It's all we've got. BTW, a three month supply of the palliative medication is $13,000. Who knows what insurance will do with it.
kittenheel Says:
The insurance will probably take a while to shake out, but in the meantime, would cash help? Do Brad and Ish have what they need for school, sports, extracurricular? /homepage
snow Says:
Yes, please let us know if anything can help!!!! Gift cards for meals, coffee, whatever!!! Please let us help!!
Fritz The Bootlegger Says:
Unless Autumn wanted scrapple. In which case I'd totally send it.
Evil Fury Says:
We don't need anything. We're good for now. Thanks, though. We love you guys.
Fritz The Bootlegger Says:
We love you too, Susan. And you know I'm serious because I'm going to do this:

soundecho Says:
I haven't been around, but this has been heavy on my mind since I read your first post about it. I am so sorry to read this and like everyone else said, y'all are in my daily thoughts and prayers and if there is anything I can do please let me know. I mean that. /homepage
Fritz The Bootlegger Says:
There should have been a huuggggzzz in between those brackets. I must have triggered an HTML wormhole.
Evil Fury Says:
I love you guys. Thanks so much. I hate every single person I come into contact with these days but I adore you. And, actually that wasn't true--I do love several people in this terrible town and they have been awesome. I just find myself hating the cashier who asks how I'm going. I know it's unreasonable. I'm not that crazy yet.
kittenheel Says:
I loved Molly Ivins' description of how she handled having cancer. It was something like, "I drank through the whole thing, I smoked through the whole thing, and I hated the lady from the American Cancer Society." It's OK to hate everyone, including us if it comes to that. You do what you need! /homepage
